The church is one of the most iconic religious landmarks in the city and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Origins and Early History The history of Mount Mary Church dates back to the 16th century when Portuguese Jesuit priests built a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the hill. However, the original chapel was destroyed during a Maratha raid in 1739, leaving behind only a statue of the Virgin Mary, which survived the destruction.
