History of Mount mary

Mount Mary Church, officially known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, is a historic Roman Catholic church located in Bandra, Mumbai, India. The church is one of the most iconic religious landmarks in the city and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Origins and Early History

The history of Mount Mary Church dates back to the 16th century when Portuguese Jesuit priests built a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the hill. However, the original chapel was destroyed during a Maratha raid in 1739, leaving behind only a statue of the Virgin Mary, which survived the destruction.

Rebuilding and Establishment

The church was rebuilt in 1761 by local Catholics. The wooden statue of the Virgin Mary that survived the earlier attack was placed in the new structure. It is believed that the statue has miraculous powers, attracting pilgrims from across India. The church's annual feast, the Bandra Fair, takes place every September and draws thousands of devotees.

Basilica Status and Architecture

In 1954, Pope Pius XII conferred the title of "Basilica" upon the church, elevating its status within the Catholic Church. The architecture of Mount Mary Basilica is a blend of Gothic and Portuguese styles, characterized by its stained-glass windows, high ceilings, and grand altar.

Pilgrimage Site and Modern Significance

Mount Mary Church is a major pilgrimage site, visited by people of all faiths, especially during the Bandra Fair. It has also become a symbol of communal harmony and spiritual unity in Mumbai.

Its serene location atop a hill offers a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea, making it not only a religious site but also a popular tourist destination.

Bandra Fair is typically held annually in the first week of September, starting on the Sunday before the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which falls on September 14. In 2024, the Bandra Fair will take place from September 8 to September 15.
